A. Upon competition of HSIP, a student will have gained initial exposure to the academic, professional and research aspects of the health sciences field.

  • A1: Undergraduate, graduate and medical students who present to the program will provide insight into various educational components of the field
  • A2: Academic professors will elaborate on the structures of their roles as both teachers and researchers in their fields
  • A3: Healthcare professionals who are actively utilizing the skills they learned as students, will offer insight into the benefits and challenges of their work

B. Through direct interaction with medical professionals, science researchers and graduate students, HSIP will seek to explore the personal motivations that bring people into the health sciences field. Students will be pressed to reflect on the challenges that individuals face, as well as factors that contribute to an individual’s success.

  • B1: Through affinity mapping and group discussion, students will consider their own personal motivations for entering the health sciences field
  •  B2: Select professors and healthcare professionals will also reflect on their personal experiences that drew them to the field, and these will be explored in question and answers discussions during key presentations

C. Program graduates will have made significant progress in identifying their own career and academic goals. This includes understanding how these goals connect to future decisions they will make during college and beyond.

  • C1: A core component of HSIP is exploring the future opportunities that students will be presented with during their college and early career experiences after high school
  • C2: Speakers in the health sciences presenting to HSIP will reflect on common college decisions such as major planning, course selections and making the full use of college extracurricular programming
  • C3: Medical students and health professionals will cover the college education, early career experiences and professional connections that brought them to their positions
  • C4: HSIP will not create a grand map or specific plan for students, but will make students aware of some of the factors that can make abstract goals into personal reality

D. Throughout the course of HSIP, students will recognize the importance of public communication, leadership and teambuilding skills in the health sciences. These skills will then be directly developed through the course of creating a small research project and group presentation.

  • D1: Speakers who have served in administrative and leadership positions in their fields will cover the important role that teamwork plays in research, healthcare and education, including examples of conflict resolution and successful collaboration
  •  D2: The Myers-Briggs exam conducted by a leadership consultant will help students recognize their strengths and how best to capitalize on these in a team environment
