Whenever we speak with clinical professionals and science academics we hear powerful and compelling answers to these questions. Individuals often reminisce on experiences that occurred long before entering graduate or medical school. It was the good fortune to be mentored by a scientist or doctor in their teenage and early adult years that set them on a course for a future in science. They remain grateful to these early mentors and the personal connections or programs that allowed them to gain access to such experiences.
Over the past three decades, science academia and the health care industry have undergone dramatic changes. The ability for a young person to find and secure mentorship opportunities is frequently more difficult and unlikely than ever before. Many opportunities exist, but these are often exponentially fewer than the number of students interested in exploring such options.
Impact Internships is a Southern California based non-profit that is trying to increase the number of quality immersion and research programs that are available to high school students. In the Summer of 2019 we are launching our Health Sciences Immersion Program (HSIP) designed to give high school students in the region a thorough exposure to the medical, academic and professional aspects of the health sciences. Students will hear lectures from university professors, presentations from health care practitioners as well as participate in workshops and a research project.
We hope to increase the proportion of low-income and underserved students in our program, while still ensuring we have sufficient funding to run an ethical and high quality non-profit.
