Helping High School Students Gain Access to Virtual Science Immersion Experiences
Impact Internships believes in the unlimited potential of education combined with purposeful career and life planning to change a young person’s life for the better. Through immersive STEM enrichment programs, our non-profit aims to introduce high school students to opportunities in science at a critical moment in their lives when it can make the greatest impact. Through hearing from real-world practitioners, engaging in interactive workshops and working alongside like-minded peers we will create a space of growth and support that builds upon but also extends beyond the traditional high school classroom. We seek to give our student program graduates greater confidence about their future college, career, and personal pathways as they embark on a period of great change in their lives. This Summer, from June 8th to August 3rd, we are exploring health science, technology, engineering and environmental science through 4 separate virtual immersion programs:
Summer 2024 STEM Immersion Programs – 9 Saturday Afternoons (June 8th to August 3rd)
Session A: 11am to 2pm PST OR Session B: 2pm to 5pm PST
During our 9 Saturday afternoons in HSIP, students will learn more about their academic, research and professional opportunities in the health sciences field. We will hear interactive speaker talks from science professors, graduate students, and health professionals as we explore college and career pathways in the health sciences field. A group research article project will also give students an early exposure to college level science coursework. Throughout the program we will facilitate program workshops and discussion sessions to help student learn more about their personal and professional goals as it relates to college admissions, leadership skills and team communication. Our Health Science Immersion Program has run continually since July 2019, with over 1,125 high school students having received an introduction to the health sciences field through the first 33 sessions of HSIP. All high school students in the United States with an interest in the health sciences field are welcome to apply!
Session A: 12pm to 3pm PST OR Session B: 3pm to 6pm PST
During C-SIP, high school students will learn about their future opportunities in the computer science field as it relates to education, a career and making a positive impact on our changing world. Over the course of our 9 Saturday afternoons, we will hear career presentations from working professionals engaged in computer science jobs and career fields such as web design, software development, user design as well as the business operations of technology companies. Through workshops and discussions, student will learn more about how their unique personal and academic interests can relate to a possible career future in computer science. Our computer science program was started in Spring 2023, and worked with over 180 students during the first five sessions in 2023 as well as the two sessions of Spring 2024. All high school students in the United States with an interest in technology and the computer science field are welcome to apply!
Session A: 1pm to 4pm PST OR Session B: 4pm to 7pm PST
Utilizing a wide array of subjects and tools, Engineers have built a diverse array of products, systems and structures that have changed every sector of our society. In EIP we will learn about our future opportunities in the Engineering field as it relates to an education, a career and developing innovative products for our surrounding world. Students will hear presentations from engineering professionals as we explore engineering sectors such as bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering and computer engineering. Students will explore how different STEM academic subjects such as mathematics, physics and computer science converge in the engineering field. Additional workshops will be given by E-IP program staff that will explore the academic education, technical training and unique skill set that engineering professionals utilize in their work role. Students will also experience the field firsthand by working on a small group project related to engineering design. E-IP will be a fun and transformative way for high school students to learn more about their future opportunities in STEM and engineering this Summer!
Session A: 1pm to 4pm PST OR Session B: 4pm to 7pm PST
The fresh air we breathe, the clean water that we drink, the natural habitat that humans and plant/animal species thrive in are all integral components of environmental science! Environmental scientists are instrumental in identifying key solutions to various environmental issues such as deforestation, cleaning up contaminated sites, sustainable energy use, microplastics, and atmospheric studies, and preventing threatened and endangered species. Over the course of 9 Saturday afternoons in Summer 2024, high school students will learn about their potential future opportunities throughout the Environmental Sciences field as it relates to an education, a career and creating solutions that can have a positive impact. We will explore environmental science career sectors as well as the connection to core science subjects. During E-SIP students will hear presentations from environmental professionals, participate in interactive workshops and experience the field firsthand by collaborating on a small facilitated group project related to core principles in the field of environmental science. E-SIP will be a fun and transformative way for high school students to learn more about their future opportunities in the environmental sciences field!
